What Do Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings Mean?

Most people who hear the word viscosity think it is something for the mechanic and not to be concerned about. In fact, knowing what this word means could actually help you to preserve your car's engine longer.

Looking at a bottle of motor oil in your local auto parts store, you'll notice that the numbers read 10W-30, 10W-40, or others. The viscosity basically measures how much the oil you purchase can resist flow.

In simple terms, the speed at which the oil pours out of the bottle is the viscosity. The slower the oil flows from the bottle, the more viscous it is. Water has low viscosity, ketchup has high viscosity. Low viscosity is best for cold weather, and high viscosity for hot days.

Keep up with the maintenance of your vehicle by simply calling Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma and the team will put you on a regular maintenance plan and match the right oil to your vehicle.
